Poetry and Pierrot Lunaire explores creative expression through poetry and its metrical relation to music. In this workshop, children build upon the concept of steady beat and meter and continue to discuss how music communicates emotions, moods, and meanings. To illustrate, the teaching artists will use excerpts from Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21, unique for its use of sprechstimme (dramatic speak-sing), to create a point of entry for the children that simplifies the relationship between the music and poetry while telling an effective story through theatrical inflection. Possible collaborations include use of Spoken Word with Cincinnati's Elementz center.
